Government proposal to increase court fees to close on 21st January

The Ministry of Justice consultation on court fees is due to close on 21st January, with a response to the consultation due in the spring. The MoJ is required to reduce its annual spending by over £2.5 billion by 2014/15, but some representative groups of major courts service users are asking whether responsibility for these costs savings should be passed on to the end users of the service.

If the proposals go ahead, issue fees for CPC claims between £3k-5k may rise from £85 to £180 and fees for claims between £5k-£15k may increase considerably from £190 to £400. Issue fees for non-monetary claims (including return of goods claims) could increase from £175 to £270. The proposals can be found in the consultation document hosted on the Ministry of Justice website at https://consult.justice.gov.uk/digital-communications/court-fees-proposals-for-reform.
